Stages of Skin Restoration (with Retinol)

All skin types have the ability to achieve a smooth complexion. Beneath the layers, we already possess a natural and healthy glow. So, how do we get there? Many of us have been convinced that the skin can be repaired overnight. Buying into the overnight fix – that companies may claim – may result in more disappointment and frustration. However, proper skin restoration goes through a process, taking a minimum of 4 weeks. With this process, improving diet, new routines and selecting the right products are important to restore the skin from the inside out.

At Perfec-Tone, we use the ingredient Retinol – found in our Resurfacing Creme and Refining Creme – to actively get regenerate new skin from beneath the surface.

What is Retinol?
Retinol (or retinoids) is a derivative of Vitamin A. It functions by removing dead skin cells and clearing the skin of acne, blackheads, dark spots, sun-damage and discoloration. Retinol also boosts collagen which reduces fine lines & wrinkles and sun-damage. By getting regenerating new skin cells, retinol usage can result in a smooth complexion.

Stages using Retinol
Radiant skin will not appear overnight. While using Retinol is a process, the results are more rewarding and long-lasting. If you’re considering adding retinol to your routine, here are the significant phases you will notice:

Stage 1, Purging. Before the retinol works to clear any imperfections, it first focuses on pulling any impurities found beneath the surface. All dirt, oil & bacteria lodged in your pores are forced to the surface. This removal of impurities will often appear as whiteheads, blackheads and small breakouts.

Stage 2, Dryness & Irritation. As impurities have been removed from the skin, you may notice that your skin feels more dry and itchy sensations. This is normal, as the retinol is removing the old skin and preparing the new skin. During this time, it is best to avoid sun exposure and to wear sunblock. Also, ensure to wear lip balm or vaseline on the lips and eyes for moisture.

Stage 3, Flaking & Redness. In the third phase, you will notice that your complexion is slightly darker and is starting to flake. This is good and means that the Retinol is working! Depending on the number of dead skin cells on your skin, your flaking process is more or less significant. You will also notice a slightly red complexion. This is temporary due to the process and the new skin will normalize to your natural tone. If redness or irritation occurs, reducing the amount of retinol application, can assist with sensitivity. Using our soothing Revitalizing Serum will help to soothe regenerate your skin cells during this period.

Stage 4, Refining. The last phase focuses on the smaller, less noticeable perfections. These include discolored spots, smaller pimples, or dark circles. In this phase, most of the imperfections have cleared. Your complexion is smoother, softer, and pores are tighter than before.
