What does lactic acid do for skin?
Dead skin cells are held to the surface by bonds that lactic acid dissolves. Once they shed, three things improve at once: the skin looks brighter because light reflects off a smooth surface rather than a dull one, pigment sitting in those surface cells goes with them, and whatever you apply next reaches the skin instead of sitting on debris.
It also draws water into the skin, so unlike most exfoliating acids it does not leave the surface tight and stripped. That is the property that makes it usable on skin that cannot tolerate stronger acids.
Lactic acid vs glycolic acid
Glycolic acid has a smaller molecule and penetrates faster and deeper, which sounds better and often is not. On skin that pigments easily, the risk with any strong acid is that irritation triggers fresh pigment production, so you can end up with more marks than you cleared. Lactic acid gets to a similar place with far less of that risk.
That is the same logic behind the whole routine: consistent and well-tolerated beats aggressive and abandoned.
Is lactic acid good for dark spots?
It helps, but it is one half of the job. Surface exfoliation clears the dull layer and the pigment sitting in it. - One exfoliating routine, not several. Layering a lactic acid product on top of an already-exfoliating cleanser and a retinoid is the fastest route to a damaged barrier.
- Not on the same night as a retinoid unless the routine was designed that way.
- SPF the following morning, since freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV, and UV creates the pigment you are trying to remove. Refining Crème covers this.

What to expect
Surface brightness improves quickly, often within a week or two, because you are removing a dull layer. Actual fading of dark marks follows the pigment timeline: change by day 3, most of it by day 14, and older marks continuing to improve over 8 to 12 weeks with the corrective steps doing that work.
