The Retinol Rules. One Page. Non-Negotiable.
Retinol fades dark marks and smooths texture. Used too close together, it irritates skin and leaves new marks that take months to fade. Here's how to pair your morning and night steps correctly.
The Core Rule: 8 Hours Between Retinoids
How To Pair Perfec-Tone Retinoids
Refining Crème (AM, contains SPF)
Use it every morning. Can be followed by one of Resurfacing Crème or Spot Treatment that night, as long as at least 8 hours have passed. Never pair with prescription tretinoin the same day.
Resurfacing Crème (PM only)
Runs in 14-day cycles: 14 nights on, then a mandatory 3-day break, then repeat. Fine to follow Refining Crème that same morning, with at least 8 hours between. Never the same night as Spot Treatment or prescription tretinoin.
Spot Treatment (PM only, on the spot)
Use it at night, on the dark mark only, not full face. Fine to follow Refining Crème that same morning, with at least 8 hours between. Never the same night as Resurfacing Crème or prescription tretinoin.
How the day actually runs
Spot Treatment follows the same shape: Refining Crème in the morning, Spot Treatment at night, never the same night as Resurfacing Crème. Use it on break days if you're treating one isolated mark, or run it on nights you're not doing a Resurfacing Crème cycle. Only one PM retinoid a night. Doubling it does nothing helpful.
How To Start, First-Time Users
Skip this and you guarantee a reaction.
Patch test first. Apply a small amount to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction, you're clear to start on your face.
Ease in for one week. Apply every other night, in a thin layer, before starting your first full cycle.
Begin the standard cycle. Apply nightly for 14 days, then take a mandatory 3-day break. Repeat.
If your skin reacts at any point, stop and follow the Recovery Protocol below, then restart at the ease-in step, not mid-cycle. Refining Crème in the morning can start on its own normal schedule regardless of where you are in this ease-in process.
If You Use Prescription Tretinoin
- Tretinoin nights: tretinoin plus plain moisturizer only. No Perfec-Tone retinoid.
- Non-tretinoin nights: one Perfec-Tone retinoid, or a recovery night with plain moisturizer.
- Morning: Refining Crème is fine, but only on days you're not using tretinoin that night.
Tretinoin is prescription strength, so we hold this one to a stricter same-day rule rather than the 8-hour spacing above. Tretinoin and a Perfec-Tone retinoid on the same skin the same day is the most common cause of barrier damage we see. Your dermatologist will agree.
What's Normal vs. Not Normal
Mild dryness, light peeling, mild purging in your usual breakout zones, and tightness for an hour or two are normal adjustment signs. Burning that doesn't calm down, raw or cracked skin, severe peeling, swelling, or breakouts in unusual areas are not, stop and reset.
Recovery Protocol
If your skin is showing the not-normal signs above:
Stop all retinol products immediately.
Cleanse with cool water only, no scrubs or actives.
Apply Miracle Moisturizer, two layers if needed.
SPF in the morning, no exceptions.
Restart only once your skin is calm, going back to the every-other-night ease-in step, not resuming mid-cycle.
On prescription tretinoin and barrier-damaged? Talk to your dermatologist before restarting.
Hard Contraindications
SPF Is Part Of The Rule
Skipping SPF while using retinol is how you get more dark marks, not fewer. Sun reverses retinol's work faster than retinol can add to it. SPF 30 or higher, every morning, even on cloudy days, even indoors near windows. Refining Crème includes SPF and works as your everyday morning step, even on nights you use Resurfacing Crème or Spot Treatment, as long as you keep the 8-hour gap. On mornings you skip Refining Crème, layer your favorite SPF over Miracle Moisturizer instead.
FAQ
Can I just use a tiny bit of two retinoids?
No. The rule is at least 8 hours between different retinoids. Concentration matters less than how close together you apply them.
My friend uses three retinoids at once and is fine.
Maybe, but "at once" is the problem, not the count. The real risk isn't the redness everyone sees. It's post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark mark that shows up two weeks later where the irritation was. Space them out and you avoid that risk entirely.
Is Refining Crème mild because it has SPF in it?
No. It's still a full-strength retinoid. The SPF sits on top, it doesn't reduce the retinol's effect. That's exactly why it still needs the 8-hour gap before your night retinoid, not because it's weaker.
Can I use Refining Crème every morning, even on nights I use Resurfacing Crème or Spot Treatment?
Yes. That's the intended routine. Just keep at least 8 hours between the morning and night application.
What if I applied two retinoids too close together?
Skip your next retinoid application, use Miracle Moisturizer only that round, then resume with proper 8-hour spacing from there.
Can I use vitamin C, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid with my retinol?
Yes, those aren't retinoids. Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid pair safely with retinol. Vitamin C is fine too, but it usually goes in the morning while retinol stays at night.
