Why Your Skincare Isn't Working, And Where To Start
By Arron Pinder ·
Let's be honest about skincare.
There are hundreds of options, from mixtures in your kitchen to the most advanced treatments money can buy. Somewhere in between all of that, you are expected to figure it out on your own. Where do you start? Who do you trust? What actually works?
If you have tried more than a few things and the dark spots, breakouts or uneven tone are still there, this article is for you. I am going to tell you why most of what you tried did not work, what to do about it, and where to start. It is shorter than you think.
Why the referral method keeps failing you
Most people pick skincare by referral. You see someone with great skin, you ask what they use, and you buy it. It is the most natural thing in the world, and it is the number one reason people end up with a drawer full of half-used products.
Everyone's skin is different, and not only because of genetics, skin tone or diet. The bigger factor is what you have done to your skin over time.
If you have been washing your face with the same bar soap you use on your body, your skin will react differently to products than your friend's does. If you have never used anything consistently, even something basic can feel like a miracle for the first two weeks. That is why you can try a natural remedy, think "wow, this works," and then try real corrective products with intention and feel like nothing happens. Now you are skeptical of everything, including the things that would have worked.
The product was rarely the problem. The match was.
You have to date your skin
Before you buy another thing, learn your skin the way you would learn a person.
- What does it like, and what does it hate?
- What does it react to? Tingling for a minute is different from stinging for an hour.
- Why is it the way it is today? Old breakouts, picking, sun, a product that burned you two years ago all leave a record.
- What are you feeding it, daily? Not once a week when you remember, daily.
Some people do not need much. Others need more. Everyone should start simple. If you give your face the same level of care you give the rest of your body, you may find you need very little. Keep a short list of what you are using and what you notice for two weeks. That list will tell you more than any influencer will.
If you want a shortcut to the "what is normal" question, I wrote one: what is normal and what is not when your skin starts to change.
If you have tried everything and it is still not working, that is where I come in
My name is Arron Pinder. I am a second-generation skincare expert. My mother started this company in Nassau in 1980, and she was a pioneer in treating dark spots and uneven tone at a time when almost nobody was doing it seriously. Forty-six years later I run it, and like her I have developed an obsession with understanding skin, improving it, and helping people feel confident in it. This is not just a business for me. It is what I study and what I live.
So here is what I am not here to do.
I am not here to sell you a generic product with great marketing behind it. I am not here to water a formula down to get shelf space in a big store. And I am not here to follow a trend so you can feel like part of a crowd.
I am here to close the gap between what is known about skin and what actually works on yours.
Strong, intentional, versatile: what that means for your bathroom counter
I make products that are strong enough to matter and versatile enough to scale. The person who does not need much uses a small amount. The person who needs more builds on it. Same product, different dose, instead of a different product for every version of the same problem.
I am not trying to keep you in the mirror for an hour doing a ten-step routine. I am trying to simplify your life. Fewer steps. Products that do more. Better results.
In practice that is one routine of three products, not twenty. A cleanser that clears the surface, a gel that corrects, and a night crème that resurfaces the marks. That is the whole starting point, and it is what I put in the starter routine for a reason. Of the clients who complete our full protocol as directed, 94 percent reach their skin goal. The ones who quit in week two, or who keep adding random products on top, are the ones I cannot help.
Think of it like a plant. You can try alkaline water, distilled water, fertilizers and sprays. At the end of the day, what does a plant really need? Water. That is what I aim to be for your skin: simple, essential, effective.
This is not about vanity
At the end of the day this is not about skincare. It is about how you feel when you look in the mirror. Confidence. Self-esteem. Energy.
I have watched people walk into our studio ashamed of their skin and walk out feeling alive again. One customer came to us in the middle of a divorce. Her husband had spent years making her feel worthless, and she did not recognize herself anymore. I gave her the products for free. Not for business, but because I wanted her to look in the mirror and see her worth again.
There is already enough going on in the world. You should at least feel good about yourself. You are worth taking care of, and sometimes that starts with your skin.
Where to start
I am here for the people who feel stuck. The ones overwhelmed by options. The ones who have tried everything and still feel like nothing works.
I am not saying my products are for everyone. But I can help you understand your skin, and I can help you improve it, even if it is only a little at first. You do not need twenty products. You need the right ones, used the right way, long enough to see the difference.
So this is all I ask: do not wait until you have tried everything else and feel defeated. Start simple, start now, and let's do this together, the right way, from the beginning.
See what your first 30 days look like, and what the starter routine costs. If you would rather talk to a person first, we answer every message.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I give a product before deciding it does not work?
Thirty days of consistent use, morning and night as directed. Most people quit in week two, which is exactly when the skin is adjusting and often looks worse before it looks better. First visible change on the starter routine is usually around day three, with the biggest shift by day 30.
Is it normal for my skin to peel or feel tight when I start something new?
Light flaking, mild tingling and some dryness are normal with corrective products, especially retinoids. Burning, raw skin or swelling are not. The full breakdown is on our what's normal page.
I have tried "simple" before and it did nothing. Why would this be different?
Simple is not the same as weak. A three-product routine built from strong, clinical-strength formulas is very different from three gentle products from a drugstore aisle. The difference is dose and intention, not the number of bottles.
Can I add my own products to the routine?
Not in the first 30 days. Stacking extra actives, especially other retinoids or acids, is the fastest way to irritate your skin and lose track of what is working. Our retinol rules explain what pairs safely and what does not.
