Can I Use Perfec-Tone With Tretinoin? Yes, With One Rule

By Perfec-Tone Skin Team ·

Yes, with one rule: do not use Resurfacing Crème on the same day as tretinoin. Both are retinoids, and two retinoids together is how skin gets damaged, and damaged skin produces the pigment you are treating. Everything else in the range fits around a prescription retinoid without conflict.

Key takeaways

What tretinoin is doing

Tretinoin is prescription-strength retinoic acid. It does the same job Resurfacing Crème does, accelerating cell turnover and stimulating collagen, at higher potency. If you are on it, that job is covered. What it does not do is cleanse, treat active breakouts across the face, block new pigment, or protect from the sun. That is where the rest of the routine fits.

The routine around tretinoin

  1. Morning: Exfoliating Cleanser, pea-sized, 30 to 60 seconds. Clarifying Gel, 2 pumps over the whole face, dried 1 to 2 minutes. Spot Eraser on individual marks if you use it. Refining Crème, 4 pumps, for SPF. Reapply if you are outdoors.
  2. Night: Exfoliating Cleanser, Clarifying Gel dried fully, then tretinoin as prescribed, on dry skin. Spot Eraser can go on the marks as well.

Two things to watch. The cleanser exfoliates, and tretinoin increases sensitivity, so if you feel stinging or persistent tightness, drop the cleanser to once daily for a week. And apply tretinoin to fully dry skin; damp skin increases penetration and irritation.

What not to do

  • Resurfacing Crème on top of tretinoin. Two retinoids in one day.
  • Spot Treatment on tretinoin days. Keep it separate the same way you would from Resurfacing Crème.
  • Extra acids. An acid toner over tretinoin plus an exfoliating cleanser is a damaged barrier waiting to happen.
  • Skipping SPF. Tretinoin-treated skin burns faster and pigments faster.

If you want to switch to Resurfacing Crème

Some people come off tretinoin because of irritation, cost, or because they want something they can cycle. If that is you, talk to your prescriber first, stop tretinoin, give the skin a week with no retinoid, then start Resurfacing Crème the standard way: patch test, every other night for a week, then 14 nights on and 3 off. See the full retinol rules.

Tingling, dryness and flaking are normal. Burning, raw skin and swelling are not. See what's normal and what's not. Building a routine? Read what your first 30 days look like.

Frequently asked questions

Can I alternate nights between tretinoin and Resurfacing Crème?

We would not. Pick one retinoid and run it consistently. Alternating two of different strengths makes tolerance unpredictable and gains you nothing.

Is Clarifying Gel safe with tretinoin?

Yes. It is not a retinoid and not an acid treatment. Apply it, let it dry fully, then apply tretinoin.

Can I use Spot Eraser with tretinoin?

Yes. It is arbutin-based and conflicts with nothing. Morning and night on the marks.

My skin is peeling badly on tretinoin. Should I add more products?

No. Reduce: cleanser once daily, a plain moisturizer, SPF, and speak to your prescriber about frequency. Adding actives to peeling skin makes it worse.
